News is like porn. Very few people are going to pay for the content when there is so much available for free online. For news sites to have successful business models, they should be taking cues from the successful online porn sites.
How do they make money?
1) Niche Content
2) Offer premium services that can’t be found elsewhere
3) Have the highest quality content (still, this is niche because the average user won’t pay for incrementally better content)
4) Offer content for free and derive value from knowing your users (knowing your users allows for targeted advertising and providing other value-added services that can be charged for)
